Women Of Whimsy Bio
Witty and up-beat, the Women of Whimsy turn audience suggestions into hilarious scenes made up on the spot. The the result is lots of laughter occasioned by a general state of mirthy-ness, an audience condition in which these funny femmes excel. The Whimsies, celebrating their 1 year anniversary this past May, plan more of the same for year 2, starting with invitations to perform in the Santa Cruz Improv Fest and the Paper Wing Theater Company in Monterey.,
On a mission to make laughter happen, the Whimsies also use their talents to give back to the community. A percentage of proceeds is given to a local, non profit organization from each of their monthly performances at The Alternative Café in Seaside, their home base. Organizations to whom the Women of Whimsy have contributed include:
Food Bank for Monterey County, providing emergency food for people in need,
The Boys & Girls Club of Monterey, providing positive, healthy youth activities,
Surfrider Foundation helping to keep our oceans and beaches free of pollution,
Youth Arts Collective, an after school program in Monterey supporting young artists.
Women of Whimsy is comprised of local women and frequently, guest players, including men. Guest appearances include players from Monterey, Santa Cruz, Bay Area and Lake Tahoe Shows are family friendly with lots of audience interaction from offering suggestions to volunteering for some of the scenes and games.
Adopting the methods developed by Keith Johnstone and Viola Sampson, pioneers of improvisation as a theater arts form, the Women of Whimsy seek to make the stage a fun and safe place, to make the work and play worthwhile, to fill the seats and to do so repeatedly.

Comedy Improv To Cut It Up At Paper Wing
Women of Whimsy, Montereys all woman improvisation theater troupe is taking their whimsical WoW and wit to the Paper Wing Theater Company in Monterey on Saturday, July 24. The Whimsies, as they call themselves, turn audience suggestions, into hilarious scenes made up on the spot.
Performances are upbeat, high energy and include lots of audience interaction from calling out suggestions to volunteering for some of the scenes always a big hit. However, only people who raise their hands to volunteer are asked to join in a scene. Gerry Orton, founder and director of Women of Whimsy points out We dont want to embarrass anyone.
Women of Whimsy, whose cast is comprised of five local women and frequently guest appearances by players from Santa Cruz, the Bay Area, even South Lake Tahoe, celebrated their one year anniversary in May. Koly McBride, Paper Wing owner and manager, who has taught and performed improv, stated she is excited about adding improv to the schedule of performances. Weve always wanted to do improv at the Paper Wing and this is a great opportunity. I think our patrons will really enjoy this fun theater art form, McBride stated.
Shows are billed as fun for the family. While scenes are not devoid of some double entendres or mild sexual references, blue humor is not part of their performance. We have loads of fun without being raunchy, so bring your grandmother or great aunt, Orton encouraged. You wont be embarrassed. The Whimsies also appear monthly at The Alternative Café in Seaside.
